UK/Philippines 2013. Director Sean Ellis.
This English director has made an accomplished tense film which starts off like an illuminating social realist film about a country of which we know little, and then develops into a violent thriller.
It concerns a poor farming family being forced into the big city and then becoming involved in criminality by the need to survive.
The ultimate tragedy has an uplifting aspect that contrasts with the rousing action which precedes it.
The abiding memory is of hard decisions decent people face in this society.
