Fanny and Alexander, December 2011

Sweden 1982: Director Ingmar Bergman.

Certificate 15

This work has been rated one of the greatest films ever and Ingmar Bergman’s most enjoyed. All Bergman’s lifelong concerns, hatreds and phobias are here, but he arrives at a satisfying magical realist resolution .

There is much here from his life especially his mother’s second marriage. The struggle between Alexander and his stepfather, the childrens’ virtual imprisonment in their home is the heart of the story, bookended by exuberant large family events.

The original TV work was five hours long but the glorious essence is here.
