Revanche, October 2012

Austria 2008.Director Gotz Spielmann.

Certificate 15

Austria’s entry for best foreign language Oscar in 2009, which was won by Departures. The film won a number of awards in Germany and was highly rated by world critics but received limited distribution outside German speaking markets.

The story of a bank robbery resulting in tragedy is set against contrasting backgrounds of brothel life in the city and country life for a fugitive grieving for his dead lover. Extreme coincidence plays a large part in the development of the story but the strong performances help to make us believe in and care for the principal characters.

Johannes Krisch is outstanding as the bereaved right hand man to the brothel owner, who himself is horribly compelling. This is a fascinating thriller.
