Israel/France 2005. Director Radu Mihaileanu.
A strange, ethnic rite of passage concerning an Ethiopian boy refugee from the Sudan, who pretends to be Jewish in order to obtain asylum in Israel.
He is taken in by a kindly, liberal Israeli family but becomes torn over the knowledge that he is living a lie.
The director is fascinated by North African culture and demonstrates a keen eye for ethnic and social contradictions which give us perspective on what is usually regarded as a political problem.
153 minutes.
