The Illusionist, February 2012

France 2010. Director: Sylvain Chomet.

Certificate PG

This film, a hand drawn animation work, is an homage to Jacques Tati, being based on a script he left unfilmed.

As with all Tati work, there is little dialogue, just the typical fragments, plus natural sounds. The result is a distinctive work about an old time professional conjurer and a little girl who joins him as he travels to a performance in Edinburgh.

Chomet cleverly has the conjurer look and act like Monsieur Hulot, an anachronism in the new world of rock’n’roll.
