Incendies, October 2012

Canada/France 2010. Director: Dennis Villeneuve.

Certificate 15

Nominated for the best foreign movie Oscar, and surprisingly lost to In a Better World, shown later in Season 2, this is a gripping, layered story about discovery of identity involving retracing of a mother’s life in a war torn Middle East country (probably Lebanon).

The use of flashback to show the mother as a political activist, prisoner and torture victim, is brilliantly contrasted with Montreal life today and the siblings quest for their brother and father back in the land of their birth.

Ultimately the shocking final revelation can appear contrived but the first time viewer is too involved and stunned to notice.
