Austria 2011. Director Karl Markovics.
Another in the Haneke style but from an Austrian debut writer/director. Markovics is an Austrian actor and his handling of an excellent cast testifies to his understanding of how to achieve realistic acting for a story founded in a truthful, almost documentary, depiction of a slice of contemporary life.
A teenage orphanage boy needing to hold a job for parole becomes a municipal mortuary attendant, whilst seeking his birth mother. The boy lives in a grim juvenile detention centre, his co workers are bored bullies, like his prison warders. One day he discovers his job is actually a privilege.
Not as amusing as Departures but equally engrossing.
