Belgium 2011. Directors Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne.
The Dardenne brothers are expert in depicting family relationships. In a brief running time they achieve much on the themes of parenthood, trust and love. The film revives memories of De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves, as well as the Dardenne’s previous works.
De Sica had father and son wandering the streets looking for a stolen bike, whereas here the boy is looking for his bike and his father. This is a heartfelt, beautifully observed film made in a social realist style which despite some incredible plot twists always draws one’s attention to the human truths.
A wonderful performance by the ten year old newcomer Thomas Doret.
