France 2012. Director Aki Kaurismaki.
The Finnish director’s second French film is set in an unusual mixture of past and present filmmaking about a contemporary story – the plight of refugees from the third world seeking a better life, but showing the port of Le Havre as a kind of multi cultural melting pot stuck in a romantic view of French life of the past.
Ironically the illegal immigrant youth being helped by an elderly Frenchman, is trying to reach England but the French immigration officials are hard on his tail. The fun does not undermine the emotional force. A lovable, Chaplinesque film for the Yuletide season.
