Japan 2013. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Hirokazu Kore-eda tells this engrossing story with sensitivity. A tale of babies accidentally switched in hospital at birth, whose parents face agonising decisions when the truth is revealed at age six.
With one boy in an ambitious middle class family and the other in a laid back working class one, the potential for farce or bathos is great but Kore-eda steers it all to an acceptable if slightly far-fetched conclusion.
As in other Japanese films about children, they steal the acting honours again.
116 minutes.
